Mod Post: Round 3 Lightning Drabble Round (Open to Everyone!)

Hello!

The mod team ([livejournal.com profile] roebling and myself, [livejournal.com profile] almostblue) just want to say again that we are so incredibly grateful to everyone who has written, read, and commented for this third round of TBB. Thank you for your time and effort and talent! It's been amazing to see so much great enthusiasm and energy!

While we wait for the last few stories to get posted, we're going to hold a Lightning Drabble Round!

Before I get into what that means, I want to introduce this year's honorary mods for the lightning round - [livejournal.com profile] i_luv_tvxq, (you may know her as @TVXQluff) and [livejournal.com profile] akmongs (@himchanni), who runs bapfanfiction. They are both wonderful people who keep the fandom running through recs, comments and kudos, quietly and without much fanfare. We think they're great, and we wanted to thank them for all of their hard work over the years.

So as this round progresses, feel free to ask them questions as well! If [livejournal.com profile] roebling and I aren't around (or aren't...awake, ahaha, timezones /o\) they are here to help you out :)

Our hope is that the Lightning Drabble Round will be a fast, fun, low pressure opportunity for everyone to keep writing a little bit more! Here's how it will work:

1) If you want to participate, comment on this entry with a pairing you'd like to write. Please keep it to one comment per pairing.

2) A mod (any mod!) will reply with 3-5 random one word prompts.

For example, you might comment with the pairing DaeJae. A mod will reply to your comments with the prompts: apple, blonde, sneakers, failure, nuna

3) You have until September 13th to write as many drabbles as you want based on those prompts! All the drabbles you write should be under 1,000 words. They can use any of the words, all of the words, whatever you want. Post your fics as replies to the mod comment, and title them like this:[prompt, pairing, rating, warnings] in the heading of the comment. There's no assigned posting times or deadlines, so you can post 'em as you write 'em!

You don't have to have participated in the exchange to take part in the lightening round! Anon commenting will be enabled so anon participants should also be able to take part. It's low stakes, so if you can only write one drabble based on your prompt, that's absolutely fine. 10 drabbles? Fine too! Real life gets in the way and you can't write at all? We get it.

If there are any questions we haven't answered just comment below and we'll try to answer them right away! Otherwise, that's it! Lightning Drabble Round starts now, and runs until 9/13! Hwaiting!!!

THE LIGHTNING ROUND IS NOW CLOSED! Please stay tuned for an updated masterlist shortly!

grace, purple; daekai; gen; no warnings

Daehyun moves into his new, tiny, poorly-furnished student apartment exactly three days before orientation, spends the last of his graduation money on food, and tries to find a good place to get tea. There isn’t one, really, just the usual chain coffee shops, but getting out onto the street means he discovers something he hadn’t noticed about his new situation.

The ballet studio is right downstairs.

That first glance is not anything but in passing – his attention is not arrested by the big plate glass window, the shiny hardwood floor, or the three walls of mirrors broken only by a door, a stereo system, and a handrail at hip height. He thinks, at least it will be quiet at night, then. And for the most part, he is right.

Coming home late from chorus practice three weeks later, book bag slung over his shoulder, thoughts already deeply entrenched in the psychology reading he needed to finish for tomorrow, he’s surprised to see that big picture window flooded with light, the steady thump of the bass audible from the street. He doesn’t mean to stop, honestly, but now, this time, he’s caught – by tan skin sheened with sweat under the bright lights, by dark hair throwing shadows over intense, focused eyes, by the grace of the body moving effortlessly through the music. Daehyun is held, captive, his bag slipping down off his shoulder, watching. And then the song stops, and the dance with it, and he realizes belatedly that he’s visible, standing here in the window in his purple school hoodie, reflected back at himself a dozen times over in the windows of the dance studio.

The dancer turns around to look at him, for him, confused, but Daehyun is already gone.

Daehyun sees him around campus – not that he’s looking – spots him between classes, in the cafeteria, laughing with his friends. He sees him at the studio, too, but he doesn’t linger, tries not to be obvious like that first time, and spares only furtive glances for the breadth of his shoulders, the curve of his spine, the careful placement of taped feet. He goes up to his apartment and listens to the steady beat of music through his floorboards while he cooks himself dinner.

It’s harmless, imagining bumping into him after class or during lunch, Daehyun dreams up more than one first meeting, pretends he could get through the encounter without saying anything embarrassing about his dancing. But he gets all tongue-tied at the thought, and no matter what Youngjae says he’s not really that good at making friends. So he doesn’t.

He’s coming home late from practice again only this time there are no lights on, and he feels a little let down. It was like having something to come home to, after all. He’s just got the front door open when someone comes in behind him, and Daehyun whirls around a little too fast in surprise.

“Sorry,” the stranger says sheepishly, reaching to flick on the hall light. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

Daehyun takes a careful breath, cheeks flushing with embarrassment. “You’re the dancer,” he says intelligently, “you’re late.”

Someone is smiling down on him, because the boy laughs, too loud – his face scrunches up cutely, though, so Daehyun counts it to his credit. “I’m Jongin. You’re the guy upstairs, right? Daehyun?”

“That’s me,” he mumbles, and he must look confused, because Jongin points – on the little row of buzzers next to the door, his is the only one with a new label.

“I’m sorry I was too late to put on a good show for you, hyung,” Jongin says, and Daehyun feels the blush creeping back up his cheeks when the taller boy winks at him, smirking like he does when he’s dancing. “I’ll see you around, though, right?”

“Yeah,” he answers, “definitely.”
